Fixing Permissions Issues
In early 2024, we deployed a fix to permissions issues on our servers. However, older files/folders, or files/folders created by people who did not receive the permissions update, may need to have the correct permissions pushed through the affected directory.
Identifying Permissions Issues
Here's how to tell if you're dealing with a permissions issue:
- Folder exists, but is not allowing you to save to it
- Only one person can see or access a specific file or folder
- Folder appears in Finder as Restricted
Fixing Permissions Issues
Unfortunately, an Admin must fix folders with incorrect permissions. Here's the best way to fix permissions issues:
First, copy the filepath where the issue exists:
- Right click, then Get Info (Or use the shortcut Command + i)
- Copy the address listed under Server
Then, submit a Service Request for File Permissions
-
Click here to submit a Service Request.
- Include the filepath you just copied.
*You must be logged in to submit a Service Request.
Admin, fix the permissions issues by:
- Mount QXS and access the affected filepath.
- Identify where the permissions issue lies (using command + i) and navigate up to a folder with correct permissions.
- From the folder with correct permissions, press command + i, unlock the folder, click ... and "Apply to Enclosed Items"
- After it's completed, verify that the correct permissions are now on the correct file.
Preventing Permissions Issues
We've developed a script that will set your computer to use the default (and correct) permissions for our servers. We've put this script on QXS as an application you can run on your machine:
- This involves restarting your computer, so save anything you're working on before proceeding.
- There is a folder named Technology at the root of QXS_storage001.
- Look for the Permissions Fix folder and open the file within.
-
Enter your computer password twice, then your computer will restart immediately.
- After your computer restarts, permissions should work correctly on QXS.
